The stark brick walls and sliver of a stage have become a quietly important corner of the New York cultural scene.... The evenings nudge the scripts further on the long road from imagination toproduction....the readings at the Nuyorican are very well known, even on the West Coast. The exposure is vital. The readings appear to be a labor of adventure, if not love, for those involved.

>> Produced over 192 screenplay readings

>> Screened over 200 short films. By screening the short films of new directors each week, we've engin eered a mini-renaissance in appreciation of the short form and created invaluable opportunities for these directors to meet and mingle with the industry.

>> Seventeen of the scripts we've read are now finished films, includ ing "Girl Fight" by Karyn Kusama, If "Lucy Fell" by Eric Schaeffer, "Trees Lounge" by Steve Buscemi and "Suddenly Manhattan" by Adrienne Shelley.

>> We've established a strong
continuum of positive press about our project with 30 pieces in the last 24 months including 10 feature articles in national magazines, trades and the daily papers. In addition, we have been the focus of feature segments on TV (CNN, WNET, Canal Plus, NHK, recently on the SUNDANCE Channel) and radio (BBC, NPR, WBAI) in national and inter national media.

The FIFTH NIGHT is an eight and a half-year-old program which began in 1994 in order to pull screen writers out of the isolation that writing requires, and offer a place where they can garner response to their work. Since then the evenings have evolved into a full-blown weekly screenplay readig series featuring talented writers, casts and directors. The evenings have been termed a "Sellers Market," where the writers exhibit their work to industry professionals: directors of development, producers, production companies andagents seeking out new, up-and-coming talent...
