The Fifth Night Film and Media Project is part of The Nuyorican Poets Cafe, a non-profit arts organization located in Loisaida (East Village), Manhattan. The Fifth Night directors and staff present fully-cast, unstaged readings of original, feature-length screenplays. In addition, we screen independent short films. Screenplays and short films are selected by The Fifth Night staff and reading committee based on merit and compatibility with an unstaged reading format. The Fifth Night season runs Tuesday nights, January-May and September-December. The Fifth Night performances are at The Nuyorican Poets Cafe, 236 East Third Street (between avenues B & C). All performances begin at 8pm, doors open at 7:30pm. All tickets are $8 and are purchased at the door. Call (212) 529-9329 for reservations. SCREENPLAY SUBMISSIONS There is a $15.00 submission fee for every script submitted. The Fifth Night staff and reading committee will consider any completed, original, feature-length (80-140 pages) screenplay, regardless of genre, content or subject matter. Please bear in mind, however, that film scripts of certain genres--such as action-adventure or science fiction--tend to be unsuitable for the reading series because they often rely more heavily on descriptive narrative (action and imagery) than dialogue. The Fifth Night reserves the right to request cuts in length and/or rewrites of scripts without guaranteeing a reading. Works in progress, script summaries, plays, short stories, short film scripts, teleplays of less than 80 pages, synopses, treatments, samples and unsolicited rewrites of previously rejected scripts will not be considered. Once a script has been selected, the writer will be notified and a performance date will be set. If requested, The Fifth Night will provide support in finding a director for the reading. We will also provide a casting director and a complete, professional cast. We will schedule and hold one rehearsal at the Cafe, generally from 2-5pm on the day of the reading. All participants in The Fifth Night including writers, actors', casting directors or directors' donate their time. The Fifth Night, additionally does not cover any incurred expenses (i.e. taxis, lunches, or water) these receipts can be covered by the writer at the discretion of the writer. We do provide advertisement in the form of our weekly press releases which we send to our considerable email list, fax to over 500 industry people, and our weekly announcements at the Cafe and on The Fifth Night office's voice mail and on the Nuyorican website. Most responses can be expected at minimum six to nine months after the script is received. Responses may take longer if we are backlogged or if we feel a script warrants extended consideration. Please be patient. We are a small staff, and we give careful consideration to each submission. SHORT FILM SUBMISSIONS The Fifth Night shows one independent short film each Tuesday, before the readings. We will consider any film that is twenty minutes or less in length. When submitting short films for consideration, please send us a VHS tape to review. There is no submission fee for short films. If your film is chosen, The Nuyorican Poets Cafe is equipped with a 12' x 9' movie screen, a 16mm projector as well as a state-of-the-art video projection system. Unfortunately, we do not have the capability of screening BETA, 3/4" video or SuperVHS. YOUR SUBMISSION PACKET SHOULD INCLUDE: 1. Script & Submission Data Form / Submission Release Form This submission release form has been adapted from the standard Writers' Guild of America submission release form and must be signed and enclosed with your submission. A Self-Addressed Stamped Envelope Please fill out and add postage to the enclosed Response to Submission envelope in order to receive an official response to your submission. 4. 2 copies of your Full Length Script or one copy of your Short Film. 5. $15.00 check made out to: THE NUYORICAN POETS CAFE, please note in the memo section 5th Night submission fee. HOW TO (and how not to) SUBMIT: Please fill out and return one complete set of the items listed above for each submission (script or film) you make. For multiple submissions, you must duplicate these pages and submit each item for script/film submitted. Submissions received without completed submission packets will not be reviewed. Screenplays must be 3 hole punched on standard 20 lbs. white xerox paper and bound with brass brads only. Other types of binding will not be considered. Scripts must be single sided only. Double sided submissions will not be accepted. We will not accept any screenplays which are exotically bound, have plastic covers, arrive in binders, etc. Our xerox machine is extremely sensitive, consequently all scripts must be presented in as simple and clean a manor as possible. DO NOT SEND ANYTHING THAT REQUIRES OUR SIGNATURE IN ORDER TO BE RECEIVED Please be sure not to send originals or important copies. We do not return submitted scripts.
